MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls will be available to play on PS5 and PC in 2026. Check out the announce trailer that just dropped!
“From the beginning, we aimed to make MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls a title that could be enjoyed by a wide variety of players,” explains Kazuto “Pachi” Sekine, Director/Battle Director (Arc System Works).
”Generally, a team VS fighting game requires the player to learn multiple characters, but for MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls, you only need to master one character in order to play the game. We have designed the mechanics in such a way that you can perform a variety of actions with either traditional fighting game inputs or simple inputs. With the press of a few buttons, multiple characters can appear on screen to provide backup or attack together—creating a new and exciting team VS battle experience.”
Senior Producer (PlayStation Studios XDEV) Reed Baird recalls, “The inspiration for working on this project really came from a place of pure fandom, and wanting to say, ‘Why isn’t PlayStation in this space?’”
“So PlayStation approached us with this vision to bring Marvel back to the forefront of the tag fighting genre. And that got us really excited, because we had worked with them before on successful stuff like the Marvel’s Spider-Man franchise with Insomniac,” describes Michael Francisco, Sr. Product Development Manager (Marvel Games).
“When they named the developer [Arc System Works], that really perked up our ears. It’s always refreshing to work with a team that will take on the challenge of tackling Marvel, putting their own spin on it, and just uppercutting that challenge into the stratosphere. And that’s what you get with this team. They couldn’t make a something boring if they tried.”
Characters
Enter the fray with iconic Marvel heroes and villains such as Captain America, Iron Man, Spider-Man, Doctor Doom, Storm, Ms. Marvel, Star-Lord, and Ghost Rider (Robbie Reyes)—each with Arc’s unique twist on their character designs and gameplay styles.
Producer (Arc System Works) Takeshi Yamanaka points out, “So if you take a look at our Iron Man design in this game, that distinctive Japanese design, and Arc System Works design sensibility will be visible.”
“I remember, personally, the first time I saw Iron Man. It was really when I felt that we had something special,” Francisco reminisces. “Iron Man is supposed to be this sleek fighter jet. Think luxury racecar mixed with a brick house. And the fact that they added anime mech elements to him just felt really naturally at home.”
“One of the mantras that we have for this project is, ‘From Japan to the World’," Baird explains. "And really trying to take not just the IP but the gameplay mechanics and say, ‘What can we take from Japan, the creators that are doing awesome work here, and bring that to the global platform?’”
Gameplay mechanics
From short-ranged jabs to the cinematic Ultimate Skills, each character features a bespoke set of Normal, Special, and Unique attacks inspired by their abilities and powers in Marvel lore. Arc have gone to great lengths to ensure that gameplay style, movement and feel of these legendary characters is fresh, new and wholly unique to MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls.
Yamanaka describes, “There are a lot of things that make this title special, but what deserves to be highlighted is probably the 4-on-4 team battle format, which is the most ambitious and innovative feature.”
Baird states: “Up until now, you’ve seen tag fighters that have 2v2, 3v3. We felt like we just had to go 4v4. And in doing so, we found a lot of unique and fun ways to change up the gameplay that I think players are going to be very excited to see.”
Yamanaka reassures players who may be worried about the 4v4 mechanics: “This time with a definitive challenge of a 4v4, you might think, ‘Wait, do I have to practice four characters just to win?’ Don’t worry.”
Francisco explains, “Learning four characters is extremely daunting, but the team at Arc System Works has found a way to design a system that adapts to your playstyle. So you could either duke it out as just the leader and three assists, or you can tag in your assist to swap the leader and change the match-up on the fly.”
Stages
Look out for a host of easter eggs in Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls, where the transitions between areas are not just action-packed and visually stunning, but also have elements of strategy. Most stages feature multiple areas, so dive into Marvel's New York City and start exploring!
More to come
“This has just been an awesome journey and I’m excited that we get to share it with all the fans out there,” Baird said.
Francisco states, “I’ll tell you right now, a lot of fighting games, they never get to experience this level of production. It’s just a dream to even be working with these two great partners.”
Yamanaka adds, “It’s about putting our hearts into making a great game, a game that will succeed, and that the fans will enjoy. We’re still deep in development, but we’ll keep announcing new characters, and also content outside of just the characters. Please look forward to it and stay excited. Stay tuned!”
